Annotated Portfolios

Written by Gavers and Bower in 2012, this paper, as the title suggests, explores the importance of annotating during the design process. It also demonstrates some of their projects and how they annotated them to help explain the process both to themselves and future readers.

I thought that the subject area was interesting and the products presenting were also intriguing. I liked how there was variety in the annotation style for each product, which made it more stimulating to read. I liked the idea that annotations could be for yourself in one way and for an external audience in another way, both enabling you to find your own conclusion from the annotations.

I thought that they were talking about openness in design, and yet the way they presented it made it seem quite restrictive, as though annotating portfolios was a must. The quote ‘methodology for communicating design research, but not a restricted toolkit of methods’ wasn’t true, as I felt what they were saying was quite restrictive. I thought the language was unnecessarily difficult and the title was slightly misleading.

Conclusion

In my opinion the paper had an important message, but was unnecessarily wordy. I think that t is relevant to my studies, as annotation is important to present my ideas alongside images to my audience. However they were trying to make a design paper scientific and I didn’t think it was needed at all.
